The College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta (CDSA) is dedicated to maintaining excellence in dental regulation in Alberta, including upholding the standards of professional conduct within the dental community. The Professional Conduct Department (PCD) plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance, ethical behavior, and adherence to the standards of practice, code of ethics, regulations, bylaws, and policies among dental practitioners.

Dental Consultant Role Overview:

The Dental Consultant will utilize their expertise in reasonable diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment delivery to support the Intake and Resolutions Team and the Complaints Director in fulfilling their statutory obligations under the Health Professions Act. The consultant will demonstrate an understanding of governance requirements in regulatory environments, and a dedication to ensuring public protection through the work of the CDSA. The ideal candidate will be an experienced dentist eligible for registration in Alberta who will report directly to the Intake and Resolutions Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Consultation and Insight:
    • Consult with the Intake and Resolution Team upon receiving new formal complaints and concerns from the public and the profession.
    • Provide reasonable insights to the Intake and Resolution Team and Complaints Director on matters related to technical and clinical procedures.
    • Offer guidance on industry standards and reasonable practices to facilitate resolution discussions with complainants and involved dentists.
  2. Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the Intake & Resolution Team during weekly meetings to discuss new formal complaints and concerns.
    • Collaborate with Intake and Resolution Coordinators in resolving ongoing formal complaints and concerns.
  3. Case Review and Analysis:
    • Assist the Intake and Resolution Team in understanding complex dental procedures, processes, and standards of conduct in clinical environments.
    • Review new formal complaints, conduct analysis, and assist with determining appropriate resolution attempts or direct referrals to investigation.
  4. Continuous Professional Development:
    • Stay updated on changes in the dental profession, standards of practice, regulations, and industry trends.
    • Participate in professional development activities to enhance expertise within the PCD, including mediation and resolution training.

Qualifications:

  • Eligible for registration as a dentist in Alberta with a minimum of 10 years of clinical experience.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Open-mindedness and willingness to amend conclusions based on new data.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Previous experience in consulting or advisory roles is advantageous.

Remuneration:

  • Commensurate with industry standards.
  • Contract position requiring 6-10 hours per week.
